Religious Services Service
The First Baptist Church (Primera Iglesia Bautista de Puerta de Tierra) is a historic Protestant congregation located at 158 Avenida de la Constitución in the Puerta de Tierra district of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Established in the early 20th century, it remains a key center of Baptist worship and community service in the capital.
The church traces its roots to the missionary work of Reverend Hugh P. McCormick, who founded the first Baptist congregation in Puerto Rico in 1899. The Puerta de Tierra congregation was formally established in 1910 and moved to its current site in 1919, when the American Baptist Society purchased land on Avenida de la Constitución to construct the present temple. Early in its history, the building also hosted industrial courses for the local community.
Built during the U.S. colonial period, the structure reflects early-20th-century Protestant architecture with modest ornamentation suited to congregational worship. Beyond religious services, the church offers Bible studies, hymn sessions, and social-aid programs assisting people experiencing homelessness, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.
As one of Puerto Rico’s earliest Baptist institutions, the First Baptist Church helped establish the denomination’s presence on the island. It embodies Baptist principles of congregational autonomy, adult baptism by immersion, and the promotion of personal faith and social responsibility.
Today, the congregation continues regular worship on Sundays and midweek gatherings, maintaining its commitment to worship, education, and community outreach under the guiding motto of honoring Jesus Christ and advancing the Kingdom of God.
